Never give up and treat others as to how you want to be treated.

RS: How did you get started in the industry?
Amy: I actually started my entrepreneurial journey in the Skincare Industry. After ten (10) good years of success gaining significant achievements, which also built my confidence to want to make an impact in the footwear industry.
RS: Has the switch from Skincare to the Footwear industry taught you and what were some of the unexpected challenges?
Amy: While passion is good for motivating us, it is never enough for us to achieve something. And to step out and scale up, I focus on the end goal. The biggest challenge was having to live in the present, managing the company, and everything I do in the shoe industry is a learning journey for me.
RS: What did you learn about yourself?
Amy: When you overcome the hurdles and keep moving forward, I realize that in complex business situations, one of the most important predictors of business success is learning agility. It is also about self-discovery of the self-empowerment you never knew you had in you before. My newfound strengths enabled me to tackle new problems or any difficulties.
RS: What are some of the accomplishments so far that you are proud of?
Amy: Scaling a new venture in the footwear industry was new to me when I started in March 2017, as a manufacturer, a wholesaler, and a retailer. I am proud of bringing Nottingheels to where it is today. Within a short period of three (3) years, Nottingheels has made significant achievements by winning multiple international accolades, some of which are:
2. Malaysia Good Design Mark Award by MRM/MDC (Malaysia Design Council) 2018 & 2019
3. Creative Design 2nd Place Winner (Women Category) by MIDA (Malaysian Investment Development Authority) 2020

Amy: I grew up in a rural environment and community, and I attended my high school in Muar, Johore. Kids in the simple community do not have many material resources and lifestyle choices. Dedicated teachers were invaluable to the community, well respected by the students, and more so by parents. One of my high school teachers, who was teaching us Accounting, had been my major motivator. The Accounting teacher saw my strength in analytical skills and that I was detail-oriented, and she pointed that out to me. She strongly encouraged me to further my studies and career in this field. She also told me that Accounting knowledge and skills would be the best resources and tools for a person to be an entrepreneur. She also saw my skill in customer service and put me as an AJK in the school's co-op shop. I remember feeling so motivated and happy by the words she said to me. It continued to fuel my determination to someday have my own business.
RS: Tell us a turning point that shapes you.
Amy: Ten (10) years back, when I was Head of Operation/Marketing for a beauty and slimming chain named "Keep Slim', being part of the pioneering team and growing it from scratch had help groomed me. The success of this experience was a turning point as my leadership and management skills were proven which was evident.
RS: Your view on Personality and Success.

RS: What SPARK JOY in your business?
Amy: Too many women have become victims of high fashion, wearing footwear and ill-fitting shoes which do not have sufficient support on the soles. I realized that many ladies especially in their 30s, 40s, or above, after years of wearing the wrong shoes, developed bunions or started having backaches. My joy is knowing that I am giving them alternative footwear that provides not only comfort but can reduce adverse impacts or prevent future deformities. This feeling of being able to give joy to others gives me tremendous joy. The satisfaction of fulfilling my others' needs also aligns with my giving nature.

Kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.

RS: What Personal Branding mean to you?
Amy: Personal Branding to me is basically 'What You See is What You Get. I believe in being true to myself, and that is authenticity. Showing others your flaws is a sign of humility, flexibility, and openness to new perspectives and ideas. It means you can adapt.
RS: Image Matters! How relevant is this to you?
Amy: Image does matter as 'First impressions matter. The image goes beyond style, clothing, and makeup. No one image fits all. How I portray my image will determine how people will treat or respond to me. You will not go wrong if you always adhere to the general social and business norms. This image should be maintained even when you are zooming in on video conferences or even talking to people on the phone.
RS: What's your take on 'Dressing for Success?'
Amy: How you carry yourself in a dress is in itself a parameter to determine how relevant you are from others' perspectives. As in the shoe business, I tend to make sure that I wear the right shoes for the right occasions. For business meetings, I would wear low to mid-heeled pumps, platform high heels for dinners, and low-heeled pointy slingbacks for more casual events like having high tea with a group of friends. Yes, expressing individuality is very important to me. Dressing for success is an attitude. I do not succumb to the idea that every woman should wear too much make-up. For me, taking good care of my skin is crucial as it brings out the natural and true radiance. Makeup definitely is minimal for me and definitely not all the time.
Amy: I have learned not to quickly and simply grant somebody your trust without weighing possible repercussions on you and your business, including its reputation. Trust should be treated as a risk. It must be calculated.
RS: Who is/are Nottingheels' typical customers?
Amy: She or he who seeks real value for that extra investment they make on our Nottingheels shoes. These individuals are those who are aware of our shoes and their features and wish to know more about taking care of their foot health.
RS: Perception is reality. How do others perceive you?
Amy: Perception is 100 per cent reality. It is crucial to manage the perception of your brand's image and I do pay a lot of attention to how my peers in the industry perceive me. Mostly, feedback from others is I am someone easy to work with, able to identify opportunities, and never give up until I exhausted all means.
RS: Words of WISDOM for aspiring entrepreneurs and young leaders.
Amy: Be mindful of your physical and mental health and always keep it in check. Be disciplined in everything that you have committed yourself to do.
To succeed, you need three (3) things Commitment, Consistent, Discipline.
-Amy

Research conducted found that jewellery customers are primarily differentiated by ATTITUDE, rather than age or income. In other words, the most important factor in determining when and where a person will buy is his or her feelings about the jewellery, and what they want to express with the jewellery. Angie Jewel's customers know what the brand can deliver across the jewellery segments; from the fine jewellery-'Bespoke' to 'Celebrations', standard 'Gifting' products, and jewellery that is therapeutic for well-being and self-discovery.
How, as a leader do you ensure that your organization and its activities are aligned with its core values?
We articulate our Vision, Mission and Values through the guiding principles of 'Passion for Knowledge ad Dedication to HONESTY.
-Angie Ng
Leadership is about ACCOUNTABILITY.
-said, Angie
Leaders are constantly faced with many challenges - the unknown, uncertainties, unclear directions, and indecisiveness. This has a direct cause-and-effect relationship with organizations and their personal brands. Leadership is an attitude and a work ethic that empowers an individual in any role to lead from the top, middle, or bottom of an organization. The most common reason for being indecisive - is fear of failure. Indecisiveness is considered a symptom associated with anxiety, stress, depression, and mental anguish, and can severely affect one's ability to function socially.
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and young leaders?
Be realistic, follow your passion, have a business plan from one to five years, constantly assess your business model, be prepared for challenges along the way, adapt to changes, and seek advice and mentoring if you can, for feedback and validation. It is about focusing, a positive mindset to motivate and position yourself towards your dream and goal to achieve greatness. Modern life seems to hinge on 'cold' technology when in reality, it seems to distract us more and more. Thus to maintain balance, you simply need to have clarity, knowledge, skills, and a right and positive mindset.

'The Talk' with Personality, Wei-Ming Chow
Welcome.
We hope this special feature finds you safe and healthy. We've been talking to many entrepreneurs, leaders, business people, and individuals who find it hard to focus. Many find it hard to plan for the future. Some of you may feel stressed and feel anxious about tomorrow's uncertainty due to the global pandemic. What if there is a way for you to cope more productively? To feel calmer. To regain control. To plan wisely through some clarity. Individuals of inspiration we worked and associated with have discovered that regaining control, and re-energizing through answering the basic questions, move them into action even during this period of social distancing in remote home spaces.
"Success is a state of mind, where you know that you have achieved something significant in life. And that something can help you develop yourself physically, spiritually, and ultimately help others achieve their success too."
In a recent virtual interview, the Founder of Solarex Imaging, a self-made Branding Specialist, Wei-Ming Chow shared with us how his attitude, passion, core values, attributes, and renaissance qualities have enabled him to develop his Creative Branding business. With the 'why' in mind, his key focus is on helping businesses identify their unique selling proposition (USP), and lead them step-by-step through their brand and image projections through mentoring. He opined that his joy is to see his clients' businesses or brands achieve success and to ensure it is sustainable. Once the skill is learned, the brand experience can be exponential, not only helping them grow their business but also these companies can further contribute towards growing the nation.
Wei-Ming shared one of his favourite old proverbs.
How did you start in the industry?
With a science background, Wei-Ming believes that 'Creativity requires the involvement of 'Science', and branding is a process of building an identity, whatever your job, profession, or industry you are in. It is about presenting, behaving, and acting consciously. How you wish to be seen or respected is in the art and science of projecting your brand. Having started his career as a Chemist and having his finger in almost every industry that requires his skills, he later took a 180 degree to turn to the creative industry from Photography, and photojournalism, to lecturing photography and even pursuing upstream advertising. From there, he ultimately found his true calling and passion in Branding.
"Success, is a state of mind, and it is this sense of fulfilment that motivates you to want to develop yourself physically, spiritually, and ultimately help others achieve success, too."
says Wei-Ming
Let's talk about ...
Brand Authenticity:
Everything he does, as much as he aspires to perform to the best of his capabilities, Wei-Ming's goal is to be uniquely different and distinct, but...
Irrespective of whether it is Product branding, Service branding, Corporate branding or Personal branding, the concept is similar
(i) Who you actually are? (The real authentic you)
(ii) What do you want others to know you as? (Desired Perception)
(iii) What do you think others know you as? (Others' Perception of you)
(iv) What is others' experience of you? (Others' emotional connection with you)
All four(4) share the same concept, the concept according to Wei-Ming is neither right nor wrong. Ideally, all four (4) characteristics are the same ... unfortunately, they are not! We leave the details for another day as it can be a long discussion.
First Impressions:
Image matters. Watch what you wear, how you dress, your self-presentation, your expression, and your posture. In our groundbreaking refinement book, like it or not, people experience us immediately. Of course, that experience will be modified over time- but the change is much less and much slower than we think. Having said that, Wei-Ming emphasized that brand image is more than just the physical manifestation. It is about building the image factor of your brand.
Dressing Well:
Always well-presented, looking poised and polished, Wei-Ming believes in dressing appropriately for the occasion with the end goal in mind. According to him, we all wish to be like someone we admire or aspire to be; our idol, a teacher, a mentor, our parents, or our boss. It could be their confidence, charisma, how they present themselves the way they dress, that we admire.
Any Lessons Learned? The 'AHA' moment:
In his early years, Wei-Ming had always strived to stand out from among his friends. He wanted to be different, and even at age twelve, he already took pride in his attire. Always looking crisp, he actually tied his own school tie, while the rest of his schoolmates had to make do with 'hook-on-ties. Looking distinct and always standing out, he was made the 'school prefect' where he had the opportunity to wear the coolest uniforms. Wei-Ming created his own distinctiveness by managing his brand image.
Words of Wisdom:
To build a successful business, Wei-Ming would advise business owners and leaders to focus on building a strong memorable brand identity coherently and consistently incorporated with a long-term strategy. This is essential for long-term success and continuous growth. Instead of putting too much emphasis on monthly KPIs for sales to achieve, focus on the 'Why?' What is your brand's objective? Who are your ideal customers? Knowing the answers to these basic questions will help determine what your goals should be, how you should approach your customers, and how you'll measure your success in meeting your goals. A brand's success is attributed to having the right message, what your brand stands for, and what personality your brand conveys through its marketing and positioning. Most of these are intangible and need a different skill set. Branding is critical to a long-term brand's existence! It feeds your corporate culture. Your brand's strategy is its story, its vision, its heart, and its soul. It is about the experience and antidote to your customer's pain point. It is easy to get caught up in spreadsheets and lose sight of the greater meaning- The 'Why'. As it is necessary to build forecasts and revenue projections for the future, take some time to reconnect to your greater purpose. Why do you do what you do?
What to you is the biggest challenge that derails leaders' success:
According to Wei-Ming, key characteristics that pose the biggest challenge facing business owners/leaders today are, firstly, leaders' shortsightedness and over-micro-managing the business. Secondly, is the un-decisiveness; leaders who cannot or will not commit to a decision. Remember your team is branding you every time they see you, they will either fly or fall with their leaders. Thus, every leader needs to give fairly little thought to their personal branding strategy.
NB: Branding yourself is most important whether you're a celebrity, or when you are a politician.
What about entrepreneurs and business owners who work at smaller or medium-sized companies?
Should they be concerned with having a personal branding strategy? I believe the answer is yes. I think branding is something all leaders should take seriously. Your team sees you as the face of the company, or at least one of its most influential representatives. When you are the brand owner or leader, your core values are naturally perceived to be the values of the company as a whole.
Mindfulness:
Wei-Ming contributes socially through photography in various projects from the Commonwealth Games Kuala Lumpur 1998, SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2001, and several other events of similar capacities. He is currently an advocate of education and continuous learning where he gives talks to universities and corporate organizations. He hopes to inspire and spread knowledge of authentic branding through talks.
