Never lose your natural self to be honest, no matter what you do, take the challenge, and don't be afraid to fail

- Raj

Raj, the Principal designer, and founder of a design and build company, NEUE DESIGN, is one of the people of distinction, an innovator we mentioned to whom we reach out to have a chat.

Raj sees himself as a risk taker, a trendsetter, an innovator, an investor, a designer, and an entrepreneur. He has a great passion for vintage classic cars, Arts, and continues to be fascinated by the Beauty of Life.

Having founded the unique design company in 2004 based in Kuala Lumpur, Raj has since become a full-service contractor that combines creative design-build capabilities specialising in Residential and Commercial Refurbishments. Today, the company provides a complete service, encompassing all of the design and construction aspects of a build, which is very much the approach of introspective simplicity, the signature trademark adopted in Neue's custom design made to individual owner's specifications, character, culture, and style.

What's unique about your design business as compared with others in the industry?

By collaborating closely, every interior detail reveals the taste of the homeowner, with an exquisite touch of ingenuity, and mindful designs with humane and practical elements that can give the entire space its own personal life story. Of all the experiences I've had growing up in my childhood days, family and friends, socializing, work, travels, and personal life experiences, good or bad,  they have become various forms of design inspirations for me in my design, and it defines and is reflective through my introspective simplicity approach. Now, by walking through one of his newly transformed homes, one can always recognise the style of Raj's unique range of textures, and touch, he can create the most stunning effects all through your interior space or home. His philosophy of quality and practicality lives today in many clients' homes and interior spaces.

What defines you to be the innovator you are today?

Dare to be different looking to push the envelope without compromising on the quality and details, and delivering the perfect combination of warmth, functionality, and chic.

Raj's Shining Through

Some of Neue's signature design finishes featuring ceiling and wall lights are conversation delights - using colour psychology and smart lighting to not only create the right ambience but also, to enhance the space and set the mood to create an atmosphere to complement the requirement of the room.

One of Raj's designs features interiors with a seductive mix of provocative shapes, tempting textures, and alluring finishes. The KL-based artist innovator designer's interactive environments stretch the imagination to great new heights. As a form of escape, it just transports you to the dream of travelling to exotic places and, at the same time, finding inspiration in Art with shadowy 'dreamy'  silhouettes. Given a versatile space, Raj can create your own space - a work area, a living area, and a beautifully coordinated bedroom. The artist innovator designer finds great satisfaction when he sees his creation comes to reality. (Photo Courtesy - Neue Design)

Finding pleasures in life and having some quiet time in Nature is reflective of the designer's style.

Raj's design concept is about the experience that makes a home unique by connecting people with nature. When he adopts his signature approach of introspective design, he helps develop a personality for the home and the place.

A beautifully landscaped home garden is just like a good-looking living room and it is designed to suit the personality of the owner. How the space is planned is how you want it to make you feel- Raj (Photo courtesy- Neue Design)

What is your latest new project?

In 2021, during the height of the pandemic, I was appointed and contracted to build the 1st branded Ace Cafe UK franchise outlet in Malaysia, which is also Neue's first commercial project. Though facing major challenges of the on-off MCO, shortage of workers, facing escalating stringent compliance and adherence to SOPs on health and safety requirements, and though many businesses were struggling to recover from the crisis to the new norm, we managed to complete the project within the stipulated time frame.

An iconic Brand - 'Motor Cafe'

Established in 1938, Ace Cafe started as a roadside single-story cafe to cater to traffic using the then-new North Circular Road in London- a meeting point for motorists who not only liked to pull over for a cuppa of a full British breakfast but also to enjoy the company of like-minded people. It was the first then to have neon signage and freshly homemade bread, cakes, and pastries were served. Today, it has been rebranded as a fully licensed cafe-restaurant and music venue, based on its rich tradition of motorcycles, cars, and rock n' roll music. (source:  Ace Cafe)

What are your life Indulgences?

Life, according to Raj is a journey, and growing up, his brother's career as a commercial pilot has in some capacity had an effect on his character, and the development of his interest in Classic Cars, Motobikes which he calls his big boy and's toys, and passion.

Being the first Many firsts

As a trendsetter, Raj is the first in many things. According to him, it also means you must start from scratch; Being the first means being more committed and dedicated than most to be the most memorable, and it is about the advantages of being the first in a category. It is about positioning to be uniquely and distinctly different too.

Raj, with his partners and team at the first Indian Motorcycle Brand  Franchise Outlet; is one of his latest pursuits. (Photo courtesy- Raj)

If you can, BE FIRST, If you can't BE FIRST, create a new category in which you can BE FIRST

Who inspired you to become who you are today?

I am influenced by several factors, including my family heritage, friends, travel, personal philosophies, and my sentiments toward love and life. My well-being guru, apart from my dad, is my brother, who is a commercial pilot and one who is vastly exposed to things in the world.

Welcome, Refinement Society(RS) lookout for individuals who are leaders in their respective fields, and we reach out to our community to find people of distinction@Refinement Society.

Never give up and treat others as to how you want to be treated.

-Amy Chiew

The CEO of Nottingheels, podiatrist-tested high fashion footwear, Amy Chiew is one of the distinctive individuals mentioned. The brand 'Nottingheels' through collaboration with leading certified podiatrists in the world, is the first in the region that focuses on highly fashionable footwear solutions for women and men. The trademark brand 'Nottingheels' has also a legal patent for shoes for bunion feet and it has been registered in several countries, including Malaysia, China, Europe, and the United States (USA).

RS: How did you get started in the industry?

Amy: I actually started my entrepreneurial journey in the Skincare Industry. After ten (10) good years of success gaining significant achievements, which also built my confidence to want to make an impact in the footwear industry.

RS: Has the switch from Skincare to the Footwear industry taught you and what were some of the unexpected challenges?

Amy: While passion is good for motivating us, it is never enough for us to achieve something. And to step out and scale up, I focus on the end goal. The biggest challenge was having to live in the present, managing the company, and everything I do in the shoe industry is a learning journey for me.

RS: What did you learn about yourself?

Amy: When you overcome the hurdles and keep moving forward, I realize that in complex business situations, one of the most important predictors of business success is learning agility. It is also about self-discovery of the self-empowerment you never knew you had in you before. My newfound strengths enabled me to tackle new problems or any difficulties.

RS: What are some of the accomplishments so far that you are proud of?

Amy: Scaling a new venture in the footwear industry was new to me when I started in March 2017, as a manufacturer, a wholesaler, and a retailer. I am proud of bringing Nottingheels to where it is today. Within a short period of three (3) years, Nottingheels has made significant achievements by winning multiple international accolades, some of which are:

1. Prof. Jimmy Choo Next Designer (Accessory) Award 2017
2. Malaysia Good Design Mark Award by MRM/MDC (Malaysia Design Council) 2018 & 2019
3. Creative Design 2nd Place Winner (Women Category) by MIDA (Malaysian Investment Development Authority) 2020

Amy received Malaysia Good Design Awards Consecutively two years in a row in 2018 and 2019.

RS: In the wake of the global pandemic, how does this impact your business as shoes are non-essential and most considered luxury or lifestyle wardrobe accessories or gifts?

Amy: Firstly, as a manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer of shoes, Work-From-Home (WFM) is definitely not an option. As a manufacturer, our material supply and shoe production can't be done at home. As a retailer, yes, we can go online, and we do have an e-commerce platform. Shoes are part of the wardrobe accessories, which need proper fit, and size. Besides, most people prefer to try them on before purchasing.

RS: What is UNIQUE about your business and your brand?

Amy: Our shoe design and features are all about closing the gap between high fashion and comfort footwear. As a result, our customer when wearing our 5" sandal heels (for example), will feel so stable as she walks and she will feel comfortable even when wearing for hours on heels. Not many shoe brands are doing this, not even big names in high fashion footwear. As a comfort footwear brand, Nottingheels is living up to its promise of 'comfort with minimal fashion. Our consumers, business partners, and friends who are our loyal followers are giving great reviews and commenting that our Nottingheels brand has vast potential to go beyond the local market.

RS: Who inspired you to become who you are today?

Amy: I grew up in a rural environment and community, and I attended my high school in Muar, Johore. Kids in the simple community do not have many material resources and lifestyle choices. Dedicated teachers were invaluable to the community, well respected by the students, and more so by parents. One of my high school teachers, who was teaching us Accounting, had been my major motivator. The Accounting teacher saw my strength in analytical skills and that I was detail-oriented, and she pointed that out to me. She strongly encouraged me to further my studies and career in this field. She also told me that Accounting knowledge and skills would be the best resources and tools for a person to be an entrepreneur. She also saw my skill in customer service and put me as an AJK in the school's co-op shop. I remember feeling so motivated and happy by the words she said to me. It continued to fuel my determination to someday have my own business.

RS: Tell us a turning point that shapes you.

Amy: Ten (10) years back, when I was Head of Operation/Marketing for a beauty and slimming chain named "Keep Slim', being part of the pioneering team and growing it from scratch had help groomed me. The success of this experience was a turning point as my leadership and management skills were proven which was evident.

RS: Your view on Personality and Success.

Amy: One's character plays a vital role in success. Skills and knowledge can be obtained but getting to know your innate qualities and personality is key to self-actualization.

Amy Chiew continues to up-skill in her craft striving for greatness and she continues to aspire to become a Role Model and Advocate with a Voice.

RS: What SPARK JOY in your business?

Amy: Too many women have become victims of high fashion, wearing footwear and ill-fitting shoes which do not have sufficient support on the soles. I realized that many ladies especially in their 30s, 40s, or above, after years of wearing the wrong shoes, developed bunions or started having backaches. My joy is knowing that I am giving them alternative footwear that provides not only comfort but can reduce adverse impacts or prevent future deformities. This feeling of being able to give joy to others gives me tremendous joy. The satisfaction of fulfilling my others' needs also aligns with my giving nature.

Kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.

-Amy

RS: What Personal Branding mean to you?

Amy: Personal Branding to me is basically 'What You See is What You Get. I believe in being true to myself, and that is authenticity. Showing others your flaws is a sign of humility, flexibility, and openness to new perspectives and ideas. It means you can adapt.

RS: Image Matters! How relevant is this to you?

Amy: Image does matter as 'First impressions matter. The image goes beyond style, clothing, and makeup. No one image fits all. How I portray my image will determine how people will treat or respond to me. You will not go wrong if you always adhere to the general social and business norms. This image should be maintained even when you are zooming in on video conferences or even talking to people on the phone.

RS: What's your take on 'Dressing for Success?'

Amy: How you carry yourself in a dress is in itself a parameter to determine how relevant you are from others' perspectives. As in the shoe business, I tend to make sure that I wear the right shoes for the right occasions. For business meetings, I would wear low to mid-heeled pumps, platform high heels for dinners, and low-heeled pointy slingbacks for more casual events like having high tea with a group of friends. Yes, expressing individuality is very important to me. Dressing for success is an attitude. I do not succumb to the idea that every woman should wear too much make-up. For me, taking good care of my skin is crucial as it brings out the natural and true radiance. Makeup definitely is minimal for me and definitely not all the time.

RS: Lesson learned and what tips you can give to others?

Amy: I have learned not to quickly and simply grant somebody your trust without weighing possible repercussions on you and your business, including its reputation. Trust should be treated as a risk. It must be calculated.

RS: Who is/are Nottingheels' typical customers?

Amy: She or he who seeks real value for that extra investment they make on our Nottingheels shoes.  These individuals are those who are aware of our shoes and their features and wish to know more about taking care of their foot health.

Amy Chiew with her elite Celebrity loyal customers

RS: Perception is reality. How do others perceive you?

Amy: Perception is 100 per cent reality. It is crucial to manage the perception of your brand's image and I do pay a lot of attention to how my peers in the industry perceive me. Mostly, feedback from others is I am someone easy to work with, able to identify opportunities, and never give up until I exhausted all means.

RS: Words of WISDOM for aspiring entrepreneurs and young leaders.

Amy: Be mindful of your physical and mental health and always keep it in check.  Be disciplined in everything that you have committed yourself to do.

To succeed, you need three (3) things Commitment, Consistent, Discipline.
-Amy

RS: How do you ensure your organisation and its activities are aligned with your core values?

Amy: General health, welfare, and work-life flexibility are our focus on our core values. We provide home-cooked healthy food to our small team to demonstrate that we care, and to share knowledge on healthy food as well as good eating habits. And since our business is about foot health, it is natural that we extend our core values to personal health. We also speak the language of foot health and wear the right shoes across our various communication channels (including digital and social media).

RS: What is one quality or characteristic that you believe every leader should possess?

Amy: Integrity is a core quality that every leader must possess and Self-confidence is fundamental, without it is like building a house on a foundation of sand. Good leaders must be able to demonstrate empathy and interact with others in ways that feel genuine. And the greatest quality a leader can have is VISION.

RS: What's next on your bucket list? What legacy would like to have?

Amy: Next on the bucket list will have to do with my passion for travelling. I have so far visited sixty-one (61) countries. I would like to leave a footprint in as many countries as I can. In terms of legacy, I would love to see Nottingheels reach an international level with global recognition.

RS: How do you advocate your act of giving?

Amy: I have always worked with the local communities, and the local constituent government ministries in providing aid in terms of food contributions, and Nottingheels footwear to schools and the less fortunate. We have also sponsored a special Pageantry event known as 'Miss Amazing Malaysia in 2018 and 2019. This is a unique platform that aims at redefining beauty pageants, to inspire young ladies with Down syndrome, lupus, scoliosis, vitiligo, autism, and other disorders.

How did you get started in the industry?

Angie Ng founded Angie Jewel & Co (AJ) in 2012. Before that, after deciding to leave her banking job, Angie, during her pregnancy offered to help co-manage, as Creative Director, in her husband's family jewellery business (known as Kelvin Gem, a heritage brand established in 1970) for two (2) years. It was during this time that she wholeheartedly put her effort into understanding the whole concept of a jewellery business like her own. With her years of experience as a banker, Angie used her acquired skills in managing multiple operations and dealing with numerous responsibilities at the same time to help manage the family business.

'Since a young age, I was inspired by my mum, who was a business owner herself in the early days. I started my entrepreneur journey with the vision to provide happiness, bring joy to people, and the latest add-on passion, adding value through well-being." said Angie.

Jewellery is, and always has been, a staple in fashion. Simply supplementing your outfit with a few pieces can transform your look! Angie Jewel & Co, through its founder's renaissance qualities and passion to thrive in all market situations, cater jewels for all occasions which include the following, from Fine Jewellery, Vintage to Custom Made:
  • Therapeutic
  • Gifts
  • Weddings
  • Corporate
  • Family
  • Fashion
  • Investment

In 2014, Angie decided to turn her passion for jewellery-making and designing talent into an academy known as Elegant Jewel Studio (EJS). It has since grown into leaps and bounds and to date, she has trained thousands of women (and men) on how to make and design their own pieces of jewellery. Many graduates today have successfully started their own jewellery e-commerce online jewellery business. Angie Jewel & Co. as a brand is not only a fine-jewellery player in the exclusive high-end segment, it is using the EJS platform not only to communicate, but also to engage by introducing new product lines at affordable prices to reach the younger or less affluent consumers, giving them an entry point into the brand, for enthusiasts giving them a platform to create and express their own unique spaces, and for those seeking to start an (online or hybrid) entrepreneurship business. It is one of Angie's pride to showcase the brand's multifaceted future.

Can jewellery be both fashionable and therapeutic?

Throughout history, purchases have been motivated by nobility, status, celebration, and love. In modern times, they are also purchased for self-indulgence and self-identity. Designers have long since, recognized the therapeutic good that certain pieces of jewellery can offer. Generally, the positive sentiments that come with jewellery provide hope and uplift one's mood. While maintaining her core in producing jewellery of beauty for her bespoke clients, Angie also produces therapeutic jewellery, whether it is a bracelet, ring, or necklace. Through years of servicing and up-close conversations with her long list of clients, Angie realizes that women (and some men)through seeking aesthetically pleasing jewellery, but many, they want jewellery that not only looks great but has a beneficial impact on their well-being, self-esteem/self-worth or healing effect too.

Branded Jewellery was historically worn by the affluent to project status, and wealth, inspire trust, a sense of upgraded lifestyle, and self-expression but one segment that is much overlooked is the inner connection to the mind and soul (a.k.a. the mental well-being).

Dissatisfaction in modern life is rampant. Whether it is your family, career, economic, marriage, or romantic relationship, there are many reasons nowadays why so many of us are feeling less than happy or depressed. Despite variations in culture, race, or religion, we all want the same things, happiness, health, family, love, and career success. These are the things that tend to get neglected in the fast-paced hectic world today, which in essence we are neglecting our inner well-being and self-worth.

This is one of the much-overlooked segments where Angie believes she can help to provide 'Therapeutic Jewellery' which, is also her passion in 'Connecting the love of Jewellery with her intuitive intelligence.

So, for a man, if you want a thoughtful gift, something that will show you care, buying a beautiful lady either a jewellery piece or a uniquely personalized set, will show them how attentive you are and that you truly care how they feel.

In terms of wearing jewellery as a fashion statement, Angie Jewel caters to both the high-end and affordable lower-end of the market. According to research, the jewellery industry is starting to see evidence of hybrid consumption where previously clear-cut boundaries between fine jewellery (characterized by the use of precious metals and stones) and fashion jewellery (typically made of plated alloys and crystal stones) are starting to blur. For example, fine jewellery used to be almost exclusively gift purchases, but today's consumers are buying high-end items for themselves. Some fine jewellery is available at affordable prices due to market saturation and stiff competition. Designers today are encouraging consumers to wear jewellery as one of the essential wardrobe items, to use it as layering to mix with both high and low-price points jewellery. This illustration is more among the new rich with the new money, where individuals aspire to project an image, as well as to express their personal style and brand.

Angie Jewel with its omnichannel distribution gives them the advantage and edge over competitors, where elite clients who wish to have a personalized bespoke custom-made piece, can schedule a private personal shopping unique experience with Angie.

With its virtual online presence and physical in-store presence to cater to walk-in or elite clients, Angie Jewel & Co. is poised for wider global reach and has the potential to scale up. In collaboration with partners, its skilled trained certified graduates through the EJS platform, and along the whole value chain, from suppliers to designers to logistics providers, Angie has already a full eco-systems in place. With its adaptive business systems, Angie Jewel & Co. can react and adjust to trends quickly.

Jewellery as Investment

The affluent segment in the industry will buy more than just gold, such as diamonds, coloured gemstones, and pearls, they are actually not spending but converting their liquidity to a safer form of investment as assets. Jewellery is a safer investment, especially at times of economic crisis where there is a global pandemic and great uncertainties. Jewellery made of gold, silver, diamonds, and gemstones are assets that actually have value. If you own something rare, its value continues to increase while you wear it in the meantime. Jewellery is also one of the most common assets to be passed down the generations as an heirloom. If you have any heirloom that was passed on to you and you wish to reset, recycle or liquidate, Angie Jewel & Co. offers consultation on whether to hold on to the asset or otherwise.

Is Personal Branding as Important as Business Brand?

So you're a founder and you have created a brand for your company that you're proud of. But what about your personal brand? In the age of digital evolution, consumers are responding to founders who share their personal lives on social media, and it's translating into sales. According to a survey and various studies, it says that consumers today are more likely to trust a company if the CEO or spokesperson of a brand is active on social media, but many are media-shy and still prefer to have their personal identity behind their company.

Your Brand Aspirations
To be the role model for women, wives, mothers, or working professionals, seeking to be their own person of esteem and self-worth, while maintaining life balance, aiming for self-fulfilment, happiness, and emotional health.

Author up-and-close a day of conversation with Angie Ng

What's your pitch and what makes you different?

Many may say that to be different your brand needs to be widely visible and known, or that you need to be a renowned celebrity for your personal brand to work for you. While success can certainly be credited to heightening exposure, the element of 'TRUST' is key to compelling customers to choose your brand over others. In a saturated market, consumers' trust lies with brands that they know and follow. It means you need to build some type of platform that engages and speaks to your target audience. The best brands create experiences and stories through their content, conversations, or how you interact through your platform.

The Pitch

Angie has built a great presence and visibility among her global business network and social channels. Based on her ethos, the 'TRUST' that Angie's personal brand has invested in, the company Angie Jewel & Co has garnered and attracted various investors. The "Investor's Rule" states that as a principle, investors invest in people rather than ideas.

What makes Angie stand out is her passion she thoroughly loves what she does, and it basically shines through everything she does.
What makes Angie stand out is her passion she thoroughly loves what she does, and it basically shines through everything she does

Image Matters! How relevant is this to you?

First impressions and images are important and they really matter. Angie, as a forward-thinking leader and entrepreneur, is always prepared ahead of situations. Moving in tandem with the current market change, "MOBILITY' is key to embracing the New Normal Image Identity, as well as adapting. but at social events, she will turn it up a notch with stiletto and statement jewellery pieces to project
her stylish elegant personality.

What is Angie Jewel's typical customer?

Research conducted found that jewellery customers are primarily differentiated by ATTITUDE, rather than age or income. In other words, the most important factor in determining when and where a person will buy is his or her feelings about the jewellery, and what they want to express with the jewellery. Angie Jewel's customers know what the brand can deliver across the jewellery segments; from the fine jewellery-'Bespoke' to 'Celebrations', standard 'Gifting' products, and jewellery that is therapeutic for well-being and self-discovery.

How, as a leader do you ensure that your organization and its activities are aligned with its core values?

We articulate our Vision, Mission and Values through the guiding principles of 'Passion for Knowledge ad Dedication to HONESTY.

-Angie Ng

What is the one quality that you believe every leader should possess?

Leadership is about ACCOUNTABILITY.

-said, Angie

Leaders are constantly faced with many challenges - the unknown, uncertainties, unclear directions, and indecisiveness. This has a direct cause-and-effect relationship with organizations and their personal brands. Leadership is an attitude and a work ethic that empowers an individual in any role to lead from the top, middle, or bottom of an organization. The most common reason for being indecisive - is fear of failure. Indecisiveness is considered a symptom associated with anxiety, stress, depression, and mental anguish, and can severely affect one's ability to function socially.

Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and young leaders?

Be realistic, follow your passion, have a business plan from one to five years, constantly assess your business model, be prepared for challenges along the way, adapt to changes, and seek advice and mentoring if you can, for feedback and validation. It is about focusing, a positive mindset to motivate and position yourself towards your dream and goal to achieve greatness. Modern life seems to hinge on 'cold' technology when in reality, it seems to distract us more and more. Thus to maintain balance, you simply need to have clarity, knowledge, skills, and a right and positive mindset.

As a Role Model, what do you wish to advocate for?

A VOICE to support Gender Equality, Women of Esteem with Self-Identity and Self-Worth, - and that a woman can be her own boss, and with the right attitude and mindset, will strive to achieve the balance between family and work.

If you have a need to celebrate or gift or for self-indulgence...why not have a conversation with Angie?

'The Talk' with Personality, Wei-Ming Chow

"Make your life a story worth telling, shape your stories and shape yourself."

- The Image Factor Way

Welcome.

We hope this special feature finds you safe and healthy. We've been talking to many entrepreneurs, leaders, business people, and individuals who find it hard to focus. Many find it hard to plan for the future. Some of you may feel stressed and feel anxious about tomorrow's uncertainty due to the global pandemic. What if there is a way for you to cope more productively? To feel calmer. To regain control. To plan wisely through some clarity.  Individuals of inspiration we worked and associated with have discovered that regaining control, and re-energizing through answering the basic questions, move them into action even during this period of social distancing in remote home spaces.

The Talk with Personality: Wei-Ming Chow

"Success is a state of mind, where you know that you have achieved something significant in life. And that something can help you develop yourself physically, spiritually, and ultimately help others achieve their success too."

- Wei-Ming Chow

In a recent virtual interview, the Founder of Solarex Imaging, a self-made Branding Specialist, Wei-Ming Chow shared with us how his attitude, passion, core values, attributes, and renaissance qualities have enabled him to develop his Creative Branding business. With the 'why' in mind, his key focus is on helping businesses identify their unique selling proposition (USP), and lead them step-by-step through their brand and image projections through mentoring.  He opined that his joy is to see his clients' businesses or brands achieve success and to ensure it is sustainable. Once the skill is learned, the brand experience can be exponential, not only helping them grow their business but also these companies can further contribute towards growing the nation.

Wei-Ming shared one of his favourite old proverbs.

"Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime."

How did you start in the industry?

With a science background, Wei-Ming believes that 'Creativity requires the involvement of 'Science', and branding is a process of building an identity, whatever your job, profession, or industry you are in. It is about presenting, behaving, and acting consciously. How you wish to be seen or respected is in the art and science of projecting your brand. Having started his career as a Chemist and having his finger in almost every industry that requires his skills, he later took a 180 degree to turn to the creative industry from Photography, and photojournalism, to lecturing photography and even pursuing upstream advertising.  From there, he ultimately found his true calling and passion in Branding.

"Success, is a state of mind, and it is this sense of fulfilment that motivates you to want to develop yourself physically, spiritually, and ultimately help others achieve success, too."

says Wei-Ming

Let's talk about ...

Brand Authenticity:

Everything he does, as much as he aspires to perform to the best of his capabilities, Wei-Ming's goal is to be uniquely different and distinct, but...

Irrespective of whether it is Product branding, Service branding, Corporate branding or Personal branding, the concept is similar

Wei-Ming's take on the four (4) versions of your own (brand) identity:

(i)   Who you actually are? (The real authentic you)
(ii)  What do you want others to know you as? (Desired Perception)
(iii) What do you think others know you as? (Others' Perception of you)
(iv) What is others' experience of you? (Others' emotional connection with you)

All four(4) share the same concept, the concept according to Wei-Ming is neither right nor wrong. Ideally, all four (4) characteristics are the same ... unfortunately, they are not! We leave the details for another day as it can be a long discussion.

First Impressions:

Image matters. Watch what you wear, how you dress, your self-presentation, your expression, and your posture. In our groundbreaking refinement book, like it or not, people experience us immediately. Of course, that experience will be modified over time- but the change is much less and much slower than we think. Having said that, Wei-Ming emphasized that brand image is more than just the physical manifestation. It is about building the image factor of your brand.

"Once you learn how to manage these image factor(s), it can at the least help to influence how others think of you and it greatly impacts how you curate your brand", said Wei-Ming.

Dressing Well:

Always well-presented, looking poised and polished, Wei-Ming believes in dressing appropriately for the occasion with the end goal in mind.  According to him, we all wish to be like someone we admire or aspire to be; our idol, a teacher, a mentor, our parents, or our boss. It could be their confidence, charisma, how they present themselves the way they dress, that we admire.

"People who stand out from the crowd are perceived as powerful and magnetic. And dressing well is about showing your Professionalism and Respect."

Any Lessons Learned? The 'AHA' moment:

In his early years, Wei-Ming had always strived to stand out from among his friends. He wanted to be different, and even at age twelve, he already took pride in his attire. Always looking crisp, he actually tied his own school tie, while the rest of his schoolmates had to make do with 'hook-on-ties. Looking distinct and always standing out, he was made the 'school prefect' where he had the opportunity to wear the coolest uniforms. Wei-Ming created his own distinctiveness by managing his brand image.

Words of Wisdom:

To build a successful business, Wei-Ming would advise business owners and leaders to focus on building a strong memorable brand identity coherently and consistently incorporated with a long-term strategy.  This is essential for long-term success and continuous growth. Instead of putting too much emphasis on monthly KPIs for sales to achieve, focus on the 'Why?' What is your brand's objective? Who are your ideal customers? Knowing the answers to these basic questions will help determine what your goals should be, how you should approach your customers, and how you'll measure your success in meeting your goals.  A brand's success is attributed to having the right message, what your brand stands for, and what personality your brand conveys through its marketing and positioning. Most of these are intangible and need a different skill set. Branding is critical to a long-term brand's existence! It feeds your corporate culture. Your brand's strategy is its story, its vision, its heart, and its soul. It is about the experience and antidote to your customer's pain point. It is easy to get caught up in spreadsheets and lose sight of the greater meaning- The 'Why'. As it is necessary to build forecasts and revenue projections for the future, take some time to reconnect to your greater purpose. Why do you do what you do?

"Never lose sight of the forest to see the trees. Always look at the big picture."

What to you is the biggest challenge that derails leaders' success:

According to Wei-Ming, key characteristics that pose the biggest challenge facing business owners/leaders today are, firstly, leaders' shortsightedness and over-micro-managing the business. Secondly, is the un-decisiveness; leaders who cannot or will not commit to a decision. Remember your team is branding you every time they see you, they will either fly or fall with their leaders. Thus, every leader needs to give fairly little thought to their personal branding strategy.

NB: Branding yourself is most important whether you're a celebrity, or when you are a politician.

What about entrepreneurs and business owners who work at smaller or medium-sized companies?

Should they be concerned with having a personal branding strategy? I believe the answer is yes. I think branding is something all leaders should take seriously. Your team sees you as the face of the company, or at least one of its most influential representatives. When you are the brand owner or leader, your core values are naturally perceived to be the values of the company as a whole.

Mindfulness:

Wei-Ming contributes socially through photography in various projects from the Commonwealth Games Kuala Lumpur 1998, SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2001, and several other events of similar capacities. He is currently an advocate of education and continuous learning where he gives talks to universities and corporate organizations. He hopes to inspire and spread knowledge of authentic branding through talks.

Is your company acquiring the necessary skills for 'Customer Intimacy'?

Leaders can and must lead, but employees from all ranks of a company - from the back office and the front - must participate in the shift to CUSTOMER INTIMACY. A team spirit, and a sense of shared GOALS, must light up a company's efforts at intimacy. Teams of people working together create more excitement, more energy, more ideas, and more enthusiasm than individuals ever can. Try to imagine your own company. How Far Is Too Far? An ethics questionnaire to help you decide.

In the business world, it is often difficult to know when our actions are ethical and when they are not. How Far is too far when faced with the ethics questionnaire? The more you compete with others for business, the more difficult it will be to decide what's ethical and what's not. Competition drives the economic system, legal system, and political system. Competition drives our society, and that means we are all pitching, all the time. Image Courtesy: Unsplash by Kelly Sikkema How far should a sales pitch actually go? Full disclosure is the best policy. Anything that can be done openly and publicly without embarrassment is inherently ethical. But the converse is not true- things that must remain secret aren't necessarily unethical. Competi

Would you like a cup of coffee? You say....

Why do people like looking in the mirror? Why do people like looking in a mirror? We mostly mirror unconsciously. One of the fastest ways to create a good first impression and improve rapport is to use the mirror image. People will think you're reading their minds.  Why use the mirror image? Why do people like looking in the mirror? Ever seen a yawn become contagious? If you smile at someone, don't they smile back? Doesn't it make you feel happier?  Sometimes, we don't have to say anything or too much, or crack our heads to use any chat lines. In the initial stage, it's a sincere SMILE that makes a difference. Once you've ' broken the ice ', words become the focus. Remember a good smile is an asset in building relationships as it helps to connect.
